Relinquishing worry
Waiting teaches us to dwell fully where we are. When we don’t control our circumstances and we can’t predict the future, we have the opportunity to live in the present. From the book Seven Spiritual Gifts of Waiting.
We all have experienced the stress that is involved while trying to conceive; yet we also have experienced the hope that comes when we are ready to start our journey of infertility treatments. This is the time when I learned that I can let go of trying to “fix” a situation and finally get help for something I couldn’t figure out on my own…
Shortly after starting infertility treatments that sense of hope has transformed itself to a sense of panic mixed with worrying about the results, the future, the costs, the tests, and all that is involved. This worrying grows with each IUI and IVF cycle.
At a certain point in the process I realized that all these negative emotions have been a great “solution” and are serving to prevent me from checking in with myself and just staying present with how I feel, who I am in the process and doing my work on accepting any outcome on this journey. For a while, worry was much easier than accepting what was, yet did it really help me that much? We know the answer to that…
As a life coach I realized that I was not supporting my goals that way and again was asking myself how can I shift from worry to something more positive, more supportive and healthier for me during this stressful and demanding process.
If you have read some of my posts you already know that I am a firm believer in the magic that comes from finding the gifts on the path to parenthood. Like anything else in life, this journey never promises us any results, yet we put it on the top of our goal list. If it’s such an important part of our life and we invest so much effort in it, shouldn’t we receive some results?
A powerful gift that comes from infertility is the ability to be present, aware and live in the present moment. We have little control of the future and especially in this hard process, yet we get the opportunity to practice being present for ourselves during this process. If we give up on projecting the future and center our thoughts on today, we have been given a gift for life that can be applied to all other areas of our life.
Surrounding the worry and living in today allows us to find gratitude in our days, in what we have vs. focus on what hasn’t happened yet. Taking away the worrying is very important for clearing our minds, which as we all know, is very important during our infertility treatments.
At this holiday season I send you all the gifts of infertility – today let it be the Relinquishing of worry and finding gratitude in what we have today.
